GENERAL INFORMATION

What does Kingwood Musical Arts Society do? Kingwood Musical Arts Society (KMAS) is the parent and fundraising organization for two performing ensembles – the Kingwood Big Band and the Kingwood Chorale and Chamber Orchestra.

How many people work at Kingwood Musical Arts Society? One part-time paid staff and 15-20 Directors on the Board.

What type of music do you perform? The Chorale has performed most of the moderate-length choral masterworks dating from the Baroque through the Twentieth Century. Recent performances include Carmina Burana (Orff), Vivaldi Gloria, Rutter Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Rossini Stabat Mater, Duruflé Requiem, Poulenc Gloria, Bernstein Chichester Psalms, and Vaughan Williams Five Mystical Songs. Lately, concerts have become thematic, programming instrumental works with the choral works to provide perspective. The Big Band repertoire includes music made famous by such Big Band-era luminaries as Duke Ellington, Harry James, Stan Kenton, Tommy Dorsey, and others.

Where do you perform? Chorale performances are held in various area churches and sometimes in area schools. Big Band Concerts are held on the campus of Lone Star College-Kingwood. Two open-air free holiday concerts are usually also held at Kings Harbor Waterfront Village, one celebrating the fourth of July and another in early December – “Holiday at the Harbor.”

Does Kingwood Musical Arts Society have any involvement with local schools? Yes. KMAS is partnered with Lone Star College-Kingwood (Fine Arts Department). Many students are members of our ensembles. college and KMAS jointly sponsor functions which help to raise money for Fine Arts Student Scholarships.

How can I make a contribution to KMAS? You can become a Society Member by making a contribution online (click above), by mail using our season brochure, or in person at any concert. Donations may be made with a credit card or your PayPal account online and with check or credit card by mail or in person.

Is my contribution necessary? Absolutely! Nationally, 80% of all giving to the arts is provided by individual contributions. Arts organizations like KMAS rely on individual contributions since ticket sales only account for about 30% of the cost of an average performance.

What are the advantages to being a Society member? Society Members enjoy many benefits, including lower ticket prices than single ticket buyers, reserved seating, advance notice of concerts, and ticket exchange privileges.

May I bring my child(ren)? Children 10 years of age and older are welcome at all performances with a purchased ticket. While we have no specific policy on bringing younger children, many standard-length concerts are inappropriate for small children only because they require an attention span that is difficult for youngsters to maintain. Please use parental discretion – and take responsibility for the behavior of your children at all times. Also, please bear in mind that our concerts are recorded.

TICKETS

Where can I buy tickets? You can buy tickets online (above), from any of our ensemble members, or at either of our box offices (Kingwood Kroger & H-E-B).

What is a season ticket? A season ticket is one ticket to each of the concerts (usually five in a season).

When do single tickets go on sale? Single tickets for the current season can be purchased at any time by downloading and completing the ticket portion of the season brochure. Tickets will generally be available at the box offices and through members about three weeks before a concert.

Why can't I purchase tickets online for this weekend's concert? The online purchase option is disabled one week before concerts to allow sufficient time for mailing the tickets. You may still request tickets to be held for you at Will Call by telephone or email. Also tickets may be purchased at our store box offices up to the day of the concert.

Does Kingwood Musical Arts Society offer discounts for students and seniors? Yes. Students may purchase tickets for $5 each and seniors may purchase tickets for $10 each.

What happens if my schedule changes and I can’t attend? If you have purchased tickets and are unable to attend, you can exchange your tickets for any other performance in the season (one time only). You may also donate them for re-sale by the box office. If requested, a receipt for the value of the tickets will be provided by mail as a tax-deductible donation to Kingwood Musical Arts Society.

What if I lose my tickets? If you lose your tickets, replacement tickets can be issued with proof of payment either at the door or by emailing your request.

GETTING THERE

What should I wear to a concert? Concerts are meant to be a great social occasion and you should feel free to dress comfortably. Many people will wear business clothes or slightly dressy casual clothes, but you'll see everything from khakis with a nice shirt to dresses and suits. Some people enjoy dressing up and making it a special night, and you can as well. Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable!

When should I arrive? Allow enough time for travel, parking, picking up or purchasing tickets, and getting into your seat before the concert is scheduled to begin. Regular season concerts begin at 7:30 PM. The box office opens one hour before the concert, and the doors open about 20 minutes before the concert.

How do I get to the concert venue, and where do I park? Maps and driving directions to all venues are available on the website. Ample parking is generally available, including handicapped spaces.

AT THE PERFORMANCE

What happens if I arrive late? At Chorale concerts, latecomers will be seated at the first appropriate pause in the program. Big Band concerts are, by nature, less formal and latecomers can find seats immediately. If you must leave during a performance, please do so quietly.

Are seats reserved? Reserved section seating is a benefit provided to our Society members (Virtuoso and higher), usually the front center section of the venue. Reserved seats will be marked as such. The rest of the venue is open seating.

What are the best seats? Different people have different opinions about what are the best seats. Some prefer to be up close and others further back. And since our venues vary, the best seats will also vary. All of the venues however have wonderful acoustics that ensure beautiful sound throughout.

What if I’m in a wheelchair or need special accommodations? All Kingwood Musical Arts Society venues are accessible. As facilities vary from location to location, please request assistance on arrival to ensure the most comfortable seating.

May I leave my cell phone on in case someone needs to reach me? Out of respect for the audience and performers, all electronic devices with ringers or alarms must be turned off.

What can I bring to the concert? Food or drink is not allowed in concert venues, except bottled water (please don’t forget to take your bottle with you at the end of the concert). Also, we encourage that strong fragrances be left at home, as fellow concert-goers may be sensitive.

Can I smoke? KMAS venues are smoke-free environments – smoking is only permitted outside. Further, LSC-Kingwood campus has designated outside smoking areas (posted at the entrance).

When should I clap? Applause at performances is meant both as a greeting and to show appreciation for the artists. Just before a Chorale concert begins, after all the musicians are seated, the Concertmaster comes on stage to tune the musicians. Traditionally, patrons applaud to greet the Concertmaster and again a few moments later to greet the Conductor and/or soloists. Once the concert begins, applause is customary after the completion of the last movement of each work. You can look in your program if you are uncertain about the number of movements. If you are attending a Big Band concert, spontaneous applause is often the norm – for instance, at the end of a instrument solo but before the end of the song.

What if I need to cough during the music? Coughing can be an unavoidable problem. But there are ways to avoid coughing during the music…Please consider visiting a water fountain prior to the concert. Feel free to bring unwrapped cough drops into the concert hall. Unwrapping cough drops during a concert makes more noise than one might think.

Where are restrooms and telephones? Locations of restrooms vary from venue to venue. Any of the ushers will be able to direct you. Public-use telephones are typically not available.

How long is a typical concert? The length of a concert varies with the music selection, but most KMAS concerts are generally 90 minutes to two hours in length, sometimes including a 15-minute intermission.
